Thanks to Vincent for quick links above.
I'm usually posting on these threads defending the 2.44-2.66 range but something has changed in the past couple days: Halloween uncrating. For the next two weeks or so, everyone and their dog is trying to get a halloween effect unusual, and keys have shot up in demand. Coupled with the stupid price of BP expanders, and eerie keys for the same price, means nobody is buying regular keys from the store, and it looks here like keys are headed towards 2.77.
Even on Outpost, the key seller volume is way down. You can tell by looking at the oldest trade on the last page of the search "keys -> ref".
The buyers asking price of 2.66 ref is not being taken either, on Outpost or on tf2trade:

I did not witness any key sales on any trade servers last night, and asking around, others have not either.
I am actively trying to buy keys with over 50 refined at the moment, and using the excellent tf2outpost toolbox script (userscripts.org/scripts/show/148791), have hidden all 2.77 key trades on the search above. This shows me only a handful of sellers left at 2.66, and it's a race to buy them now.
It pains me to but I agree.
I've been selling keys for 2.70 in servers, and people still freak out over it. I agree that this is what keys could be at, but honestly, people will downvote out of sheer stubborness.
I agree, and when the halloween hype dies down, it'll go back to normal.
Don't resist out of stubborness, it'll be back at 2.66 (or even 2.55) before you know it.
I can say that I had keys for sale at 2.66 it all sold in secs had 10 adders in a sec. I then got more keys sold those easy in 10 min for 2.77
I've bought tons of them today at 2.66 personally, I see many list at 2.77 and 2.66 is instantly bought. This range might actually be valid, but needs a bit more research.
Yesterday I was looking to buy 15 key @2.66 ref for a friend and there were many who wanted to sell at that price but were mostly out of stock or left with 1 or two keys. So I guess till Halloween update mania is over 2.66-2.77 range seems good
I have wasted an hour or two trying to find keys at 2.66. I can confidently say there are none left on Outpost at the moment for 2.66 ref. Brad Pitt has bought them all. :)
Edit: Something to watch: http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/5740810
I was trying very hard on servers late last night to buy 2 keys for 5 ref or 2 keys for 5.11, but no one would sell me one. They were all selling at 2.66. I didn't noticing anyone selling at 2.77 though to be honest, only at 2.66.
The way the key sellers are, if we raise this then it will never drop again
please just wait for the halloween hype to be over before giving the key sellers even more excuse for the retarded inflation we've seen recently.
I had some good luck of finding someone selling eerie keys last night for 2.88 in metal (wouldn't take regular keys for them for some reason) but since I didn't have any metal I hit up a trade server and sold 10 keys for 2.66. Within 15 seconds of me advertising I was selling for this, 3 people had sent me trade requests and sold them all without a hitch in less than a minute. This means to me that people see 2.66 as a good deal when the regular or average price is higher than that. basically I agree :)
Unfortunately, this might be correct. I was selling 4 or 5 keys for 2.66 on TF2OP, 2 days ago... I was added twice and sold all within about 15 minutes. IMHO, stuff only sells that fast on TF2OP when you are offering a good price
I don't care about the price rise... I just hate having to do fractional calculations in base 9... maybe we could just go straight to 3 ref to keep it simple? :D
edit:Actually, I guess I need a little more ref, so I'll try posting keys on TF2OP now at 2.77 and see what happens...
This is definitely true. I had a key up for 2.66 and 3 people added me within seconds. Some one is buying my key for 2.70 though so I'd guess the range is there. 2.66-2.77.
@AF2 | Spark_SJH - You are wrong. Price will never go back down. I say this over and over again. Look at what happened last Halloween. Prior to it, keys went for 2-2.3ref. During Halloween, they rose to 2.44-2.55 ref. They never went back down to 2.33 ref.
I am not saying I am against the increase, I am simply stating a fact. Key prices will NOT go back down. They are always in high demand.
Looking at this more closely, Brad Pitt is correct: we need to hear from people who have bought or sold keys at 2.77 for this price suggestion to be accepted. I have managed to snipe a few keys tonight, buying at 2.66 and 2.7 but not yet at 2.77. I don't think a price suggestion of 2.7 would have made sense, that's why I put the range, but I know there has to be transactions at both points for it to be accurate.
Upvote. This is correct. backpack.tf is one source for valuing things, so there's always a range for keys.
Also, I find it slightly hilarious how Brad accepted the -121 vote last time.
If i've started to buy at 2.55 , the price must at least be 2.66 xD
2.66 and 2.77 is so ugly for keys though...
It's not even that hard. I shot up a trade on Outpost and I bought 4 keys for 2.55 ref each in half an hour (I have no proof, folks just added me). The same goes with people on trade servers, I still see people selling 2 for 5 ref. The only proof for anything we can get is from Outpost, and we all know how people sell on Outpost... You know, once this price is more widely accepted, nobody will sell for what they used to be, and they will only become more expensive. Supply and demand for keys is just irrelevant, they're a currency for items, nothing more, they aren't an item in itself.
I sold a key for 3 ref
I was too lazy to put all the links in my proof for my suggestion, as long as people know. *sold 11 of my keys at 2.88 ref each*
So as I said 2 hours ago, I just tried trading a few keys for 2.77 on TF2OP, and sure enough I was able to sell a total of 4 keys at 2.77 to two different buyers.

I think during this event definitely. Especially considering you have a chance of getting Halloween items/unusuals in regular crates too not just the new eerie ones.
However, I think 2.77 is pushing it.. I've seen plenty of trades in trading servers of people even now still doing 2 keys for 5 ref. Now that doesn't mean that is the norm, but it does show that it isn't "impossible" to get for less than 2.66.
However, overall, i've seen alot of people selling buds for a lower than normal amount of keys to uncrate. This has shot up the demand for these. I will have to agree for now.
Just bought 2 keys for 5.11(2.55) downvote
This seems legit due to the new demand in keys, warehouse is almost out of keys now.
I've been selling at 2.66-2.77. The sad truth is that the price of keys is still going up. Upvote.
downvoted purely based in tf oupost inflated prices, in trade servers im able to easily find it for 2.66
I've never seen any one ever saying they are selling for 2.77 on a trade server. Many buyers for 2.66 and 2.55, some sellers at 2.66, no sellers at 2.55 unless your extremely lucky, I've tried 6 hours over the past two days and haven't bought for that price. Lots of people are beginning to hoard keys on servers and most likely in general, way more buyers than sellers.
I have seen people selling for 2.55 and usually pick keys up for 2.66 pretty easily. I do believe 2.66 should be the set price but do not agree the range. Prices should not be left to inflate due to GREED. People will always try and sell higher than the market price and some people may buy them and pander to the greed but this should not drive prices up. Increasing the price of keys will just lead to people inflating there prices until the value is unsustainable. THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED HAPPEN
Srsly? No, just no.
I bought a ton of Keys for 2.55 Ref each.
Yesterday I got 40 Keys for 2.55 each.
sold 8 keys for what averaged out to 2.75 per key, add for that bulk deal in 2 minutes. got a another add right after for 2.77 per key. I'm convinced this is the correct range right now.
also lol @ the guy 2 posts above me who just replaced the words "supply and demand" with "greed"
i'm not trying to explain more why this is so wrong.
CLEAR downvote.
Upvote.
Backpack.tf is for Tracking Prices, and this IS the going Price.
Not Hard to buy and very easy to sell at 2.66 ref, 2.77 is harder to sell but possible.
I'm pretty sure this is just because of the Halloween Unusuals, but these Fucking Keysellers will keep the Price at this Level.
I saw people now giving 2.66 refined to get a key... so that price isn't so scary... but I think it's a bit soon to rise the price
This is ridiculous. Buying for 2.55 is still easy.
I disagree. Leave it at the 2.66 tag.
While long time I had a 2.55 buying thread up and for the last 2 weeks I had noone selling me keys for that price, as soon as I rose my offer to 2.60 per key, people slowly started to sell keys to me again. If I offered 2.66, there would be even more I suppose. So since it's certainly possible to buy keys for 2.66 and under right now, there is no need to change anything.
Downvote
Does anyone use reddit? Those are some mass bulk keys there. I'd buy if I didn't just cash out all of my keys. I bought 4 keys last night at 2.66 ref and using an outpost listing.
I think the original post proves why it should stay at 2.66 ref. Not why it should go up. And just because people are selling them at a price doesn't mean they're bought. Like you can charge 18 ref for a key. Everyone can. But that doesn't mean they get sold.
Does this mean buds should go down? Because people are selling them right now to get keys..
I bought a key for 2.44.
IMO Buds, Bills and Keys should always be tied into each other. Essentially the currency of TF2. Not unlike a $10 bill. its always $10 but the things it buys either go up in price or down. IMO again buds should always be a $30 item and 3 Bills should always equal a Buds or $10 a piece and keys should be tied to bills and buds.
Said another way. If a hat is a 3 bud hat just 2 months ago and buds are now up $5 per piece shouldn't the hat now be a 2.5 bud hat? Or is the hat now become a 3.5 bud hat because buds are up? 3 months ago its a $90 hat. But today it would be a $105 hat.
Valve needs to make current buds genuine and start selling buds as a misc item in the store. Same with Bills hats. Make genuine quality for those that exist and then sell them in the store.
Once those items are fixed to a cost then the price of non-currency items inflate or deflate to market demands. Right now we move the currency but the products bought don't move in sync all the time.
Almost a day later and I can no longer reliably buy keys for even 2.66 ref now. The sheer volume of WTB posts on tf2trade and Outpost shows an incredible demand as well. The oldest (400th) post on Outpost WTB "ref -> keys" is 22 minutes old.
True but sad
I assumed that keys were being replaced through the mann co store at the same rate they were being consumed. If that's not the case then we could be looking at a less than temporary increase in key price and decrease in bud price.
People are going to start charging 3 ref for a key if this gets passed...Oh tf2 market, you were once good. And then people started keybanking....
You could even stretch it to 2.88 at this rate. People are buying keys up like it's going out of style. I'm selling them at that rate with little leeway. People are all grumpy, but the current state of the key market is massive demand and low supply.
because of the halloween event key demand have been higher. So the prices of keys went up.
I've found that
Keys Here at 2.77 Sell and people buy mulitples.

http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/5741738
Keys at 2.66 are all gone
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/3300576
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/3965823
This was just on the first page theres countless like this. Have a look for your self.
I personally made 3 trades with keys on them for 2.77 sold in mins.
People who are upset with this are only looking out for themselves. as they don't want to see a price increase btu that shouldnt matter. The price suggestion is for prices seen on the market.
There is no need for keys to go up by that much, its not like they aren't Selling them in the store
2.66 maybe, but not 2.77
It's no surprise coz more than 50,000 keys have been spent on unboxing these limited effects (it's roughly minimum). Net drain of keys according to stats.tf is more than 40,000 (it was almost 400k before the halloween and 355k now).
So it's reasonable.
Even more I think keys rising to 3 ref is inevitable.
The price of a key doesnt need to go up. 2.66 is the standard price now.
I don't see any reason to raise the price of something when you can still get them cheaper thru Paypal, also metal hasn't dropped or gone up. Pushing this above store value is just greedy. Hell 2.33 to 2.55 was a fair price. Do the math on what sells not what ppl are asking. You will see the price avg is actually way lower. I just bought 15 keys @$1.25 and a few weeks before that @$1.15.
Soon you're going to tell me a refined is worth 1.11 refined. This increase is true for the most part, but I really hope it will die down after the halloween fiasco is over.
Must say its actually easy so buy keys for 2.66.. Answer? Servers.. You ask for buying keys? Modt will then sell for 2.66 each.. But i must agree.. Most sellers that sells for 2.77 gets a farely quick responce from people while people selling for 2.66 gets added emediatly.. (Bough about 10 myself for 2.66 each today)
I will though.. Remain neutral.. Just because i actually find it WERY easy to buy for 2.66 ..
Brad Pitt made the last price change. Because no one provided proof people buy keys at 2.55 ref. But unfortunately when prices are set to 2.55 ref they're gone instantly like when I sell vints for a scrap. Usually get 4 people within 5 seconds. And you can't really search through closed trades.
But maybe price will drop after Christmas.
Inflation here we come! Keys value ain't really increasing, it's buying power is getting weaker. This will effect all items.
Bought 4 keys for 2.55 a pop, 2 days ago: http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/5389136
Admins: Just because we have the power to vote on stuff, can some items have a cool down when they have been voted on ?
An7hrax.se: two days ago is two days ago. I made a note about it. Try buying some keys today, right now.
This price suggestion is just that, a suggestion. I already know the price has changed; I was doing my duty to submit it so others can be aware as well.
I agree. The value of keys has shot up since halloween uncrating.
if u this gets pass then people will sell for 2.88, and another guy will just post another suggestion say 2.77~2.88 and the key price will keep rising gg
GUYS, IT'S THE HALLOWEEN HYPE THAT'S CAUSING INFLATION! WAIT UNTIL THE EVENT IS OVER!
Plus, I see nobody, and I mean NOBODY coughing up a SINGLE link of ANYONE selling for 2.55. Is it still possible at the moment? Not really, the amount of demand is rediculous. Will it be once the hype dies? More than likely, the unboxing hype taking these off the market will die and they will resume being used as a currency instead of an unboxing tool.
It's logic. Once the unboxing stops, the demand will decrease, and in an effort to beat the competetion, people will start selling for lower.
on trading servers I can still get keys anywhere from 2.33-2.55, easy. I resell them and they go like crazy for 2.66, people dont like it at 2.77 though. I think its a safe bet to keep them at 2.5/2.55 - 2.66
Price will most likely drop back to normal after the seasons,
Although, I have to add, that Keys should stay at a certain price and never moved, like refined.
We use Keys as currency, basically if I had 10 individual dollar bills, and wanted to convert to one whole 10 dollar bill for convenience and space. Making the price of keys go up is telling me instead of 10, 1 dollar bills to make 1 ten dollar bill, I need 11. This also makes everything worth x amount of keys more and more in price; no one's going to want to buy anything since everything goes to high in value = market crash. If keys are going be changed in price like common items, then convert everything to x amount of ref for easier pricing...
