As andy and Stormflare pointed out, the spreadsheet is the spreadSHIT, especially with the accusations of the operator using it for personal profit.

It's a vicious cycle. People see sales at something like 2.77, and then the price gets jacked up. Then, people see sales at 3, and the price is jacked up again. After, people see sales at 3.33, and the price is jacked up yet again and repeats. This suggestion is just pure bullshit.

The problem is that backpack.tf shows what people are currently valuing items at. However, if we do that then traders will jack up their prices to an even more ridiculous number.

Say what you will about these prices, but the fact is that keys are selling for this much. I sold 6 keys in 10 minutes for 2.88 refined. This isn't limited to Outpost either, on trade servers most people I've seen are selling keys for 2.77 ref.

this is backpack.tf not the spreadshet, spreadshet is runned by a scammer who manipulates prices to his opinion of what he wants done, that link is absolutely no proof, and the second link is just a search you made without any actual successful trades, you can easily find 2.66 in server and you can find them on outpost, if you really want to buy keys at 2.66 just make your own trade and see how many people add you in a week. Its easy to buy at 2.66 this range is horrible.

It looks like the price is rising, because any keys offered at 2.66 are all selling out extremely fast, but I'm extremely doubtful about the upper end of the range suddenly jumping to 3 ref.

I will agree that 3 refined is a bitter pill not many buyers want to swallow, but a fair few sellers at 2.88 seemed to be selling.

@Hand slapper - Yes, a problem with several of those links is that the seller has probably edited the price, but there's no way of knowing when. For example, if somebody accepted the offer 12 hours ago, they may have been agreeing to a lower price than the price you see now.

edit: second link was probably always selling for 3 ref, because it shows 3 ref in the original trade, so I'd accept that one :)

I don't think keys should go over 2.66. It is obvious that the people that have trades up will ask for a fair price or more than what it's worth, and the latter is what always happens. We've all seen people selling keys for 3 refined or more than that. However, if you go to a trade server or if you create a trade buying keys, it is easy to find them for their fair price, which is 2.66.

If backpack.tf and the spreadsheet assume that 2.77-3 ref is the correct, it'll become the norm and traders will begin asking for even more than that. Soon that guy who's selling keys at 7 refined will change his trade description to "spreadsheet price, add me for a fast trade.".

During the halloween update, many people want keys to unbox halloween effects (High demand) and there will be lesser people who want to give up their keys because they, too, want to unbox in hopes of getting a halloween effect Unusual (Low Supply). Thus, a rise in price occurs and it is reasonable for keys to increase in price from 2.44-2.66 to 2.66-2.77. However, I think it is totally unreasonable and insane to jack the prices to 3 refined or even more! Some people on outpost are asking 4 refined for a key http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/5965201 . This is outrageous and I cannot stand people just taking advantage of the circumstances and say 'Ohhhh. People want keys? Let's just increase the price more and more'. Well tf2wh looks like its out of keys right now. Also I keep seeing people talking about "setting" the price here. Backpack.tf doesn't set prices it tracks market value. If you don't like the price things are going for that sucks, but its what the price is. Spreadsheet sets prices backpack.tf tries to tell you what the current going rate is.
