When this site was still listing 2.77-2.88, they were charging 3.11 ref.
You are not proving any causality.
I am not attempting to prove causality, perhaps merely a correlation. If you want to deny it then fine. Wait til keys hit 3.22 ref and then get back at me.
This means nothing if no one buys them, there are enough sellers at 3 ref. While there is always a demand for keys, competition between key sellers still exists. This keeps the price from moving.
Competition only exists when sellers try to compete. Competition exists (essentially) when they are competing for customers. THE SUPPLY OF BUYERS IS INFINITE! Everyone needs keys! They are not competing. They are attempting to get as much as they can get.

No they do not, there is no unboxing craze or extreme desire for keys, which is the only reason for keys to go up. People are just paying the current amount because it has become standard.
If you want unusuals, you almost always need keys. You need them to open crates. Who doesn't want a bills hat? You need keys. Or buds? You need keys. Or maxhead? Keys. Rare item? Keys. Who doesn't want unusuals? Want paint? BP expanders? Many sellers are making people 1) over pay in ref, or 2) aren't taking ref at all.
I am going to stop talking about this, because I could go on for hours and this isn't my diary. Sorry for derailing. DOWNVOTE from me, obviously.
Still, I don't think people in the right mind will overpay to get keys to buy things that badly. I hope no one is that impatient that they can't wait to get keys at a reasonable price (which is where competition sets in IMO).
Downvote from me as well because 3.11 trades aren't happening.
The admins refuse to realize that the key prices follow this site. The sellers on outpost will charge the top backpack.tf price + 1 scrap, and eventually desperate people will buy and then get used as proof to up the price once more.
Just leave the keys at 2.66-2.88 and quit fucking with the economy please.
They don't believe things work that way. Let keys rise to 3.22 ref before Christmas and then everyone will see. If enough people sell for 3.11 ref, which will happen eventually, 3 ref will become the new 2.66 ref.
The demand for keys is always high. (Even though the supply is going up. YES it is going up). Keys are literally the key to everything expensive in the game (unusuals, promos, paint). Buyers are too desperate to collectively stop paying 3 ref and up.
Sellers have the right to charge anything they want.
Buyers can also offer backpack.tf price - 1 scrap or any amount of scrap.
It's called market forces.
I agree with this....giving in to such suggestions we are only feeding their greed. There was no need to change key prices yesterday there is none today.

I swear the bias on backpack.tf towards keys is so bad that people will disregard clear proof that keys have gone up just because they want to buy keys at 2.66
You know those links you posted? A few are inaccurate now. Do you know why? Because those people are now charging 3.11 instead of 3 ref because you changed the price.
Backpack.tf attempts to reflect the market, not the other way around. While some traders do cling to the prices we list, the supply of and demand for keys is so big that nothing we do will have any real effect on their price.
I'll quote Vincent here and say that even if we didn't list a price for keys market forces would remain exactly the same.

I don't see any evidence in your proofs backing up your claim of 3.11 ref, nor of them actually being successful, and your 2.88 ref suggestion is already accounted for in the current price, so I quite frankly see no need to change it.

If you search keys around every other trade is keys for 3 ref therefore 3.11 is too high. Maybe in a week it will be 3.11, or maybe it will crash back to 2.66 or lower, who knows, but right now its no higher than 3.00.

Because too many people starting to play since Halloween event. And because Refs are becoming less and less of a hard resource to gather.
These are not investment portfolios. These are not limited edition promos.
These are items used to do something, like unbox a crate.
I have said this time and time again, and you fools just keep on begging to have the market crash. Need I remind you again why key price hikes are a bad idea?
-Keys are never out of stock. More keys are being added to the economy than are consumed, and the amount of keys that are here compared to the high that was at the Halloween update does not justify the price.
-With you pricing the keys like this, you are only ENCOURAGING people to buy keys via paypal or mann co. You are not deterring them.
-When the price of keys is raised, everything in the economy suffers for it. Look no further than Halloween to prove my point.
-With Backpack becoming the new spreadsheet, you are inspiring people to price higher and higher the keys. People will not unbox anything from new crates if they cannot profit off of any of it. Pretty soon, you are going to have the same issue you did this spring, when only certain crate series were bought. If more people are discouraged from unboxing if they cannot get a hand on those crates, you will have a flood of keys and exorbitant prices that will warrant a crash.
-in one month, almost 60000 keys have been pumped into the economy in about 3 weeks. And this is only in public backpacks. This should be cause of concern, because if the keys keep cycling in at the rate they are, they will hit 400000 before the Christmas update.
I see the Tower of Babel starting to fall, and you key hoarders are refusing to see it. So fine, inflate the price of keys. Be my guest. Just don't come crying back to me when the key prices start to crash and you are begging to get rid of them for 2.66.

This is the mindset many sellers have. I never sell keys to anyone and even I know this. Ya'll want to think increasing the key price doesn't affect how much keys sell for, but it does. Downvote me all you want. You have been warned.
pro idlers will always need keys and they will always pay more for people that have big stock.
People pump about 1,500 keys per day back in the system since Halloween ended. However, Halloween melted about 3,000 keys per day. The key surplus rose about 40,000 keys since the Halloween update ended, which is a shock. I wouldn't think people would sink $100,000 into the game, but I was wrong. Anyway, Christmas will make key prices go even higher. Key surplus sank by 100,000+ from 444,000 to 328,000 from crate 47, 49 and then Halloween.

Worst idea ever, you can EASILY buy them for 2.77 and i mean EASILY, their just fine at the price they are down, they went up because of the halloween effects, their slowly moving back to 2.66.
This is typical price inflation. If you raise the price here then people on TF2OP will just raise it more and more. Big no from me.
I remember being able to buy 4 keys for 2.66 last week..
In addition, I think Brad should be strictly moderating when a price suggestion for keys should be set. I think this item should be blocked from having suggestions placed and should only be suggested when there's a major change in price (i.e tf2finance.com changes drastically).

Acorrding to your suggestion, i just sharked someone hundreds of keys for buying at 2,66 each.
In a time frame of around 4hrs, I manage to sell 12 keys at 3 ref easily (http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/6744026) Perhaps with some time keys could go at 3.11ref
Perhaps a better suggestion would be 2.88-3ref for now as the market is ranging from buyers of 2.77ref & sellers of 3ref, but most are successful at 2.88ref & moving rapidly at 3ref.

I see no reason to jump it to 3.11, there are tons of trades willing to sell keys for 3ref and if you post a trade you can get them for less.

Go onto any trade sever and state "Buying keys @ 2.77", you will buy your keys at 2.77 in minutes, very easily.
I swear half the people who post on .TF don't even go onto trade servers anymore (The real trading environment), and they just base it entirely off Outpost.
Make it 3.11 - 10ref, so we can have some peace and quiet. =) I still buy mine at 2.66
