3.66 start to extinct. Easily sold 7 keys for 3.88 each and bought them back for 3.77 each. People add you within a minute. Nobody likes the price going up, I agree. But that's what is going on out there now. Tried making 3.66 posts for buying, didn't work out. 3.77 gets a bigger attention. To mention, check out those 4 refined posts... Jy, WDZ is one who would classify what s going on in the TF2 market as inflation, please don't waste your time trying to explain economics to him.

This post is getting my downvote, no need for 3.88 to be in the range just yet. Hardly any sold at that price. Current range should be fine for the next week, hopefully longer this time :(

Just remember that an inflation is defined as a general rise in the price of goods in a market, not just one particular item. The price of keys going up is not an inflation, it's just a rise in key prices, but I'm sure you already knew that.

I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this in this suggestion yet, but I'm still trying to figure out why key prices will suddenly drop like some people think they are.

When trying to work it out logically, logic would have to bend over backwards 360 degrees and grow a third leg to make sense.

It's really a special case, since keys seem to be "rising" and yet they don't have any more purchasing power when it comes to buying items priced in keys. The same goes for metal "deflating".

By that, I mean that one could argue that keys are now worth more. However, if that were true, it would only take 6 keys to buy a bills instead of 8 (since 6 keys now is worth what 8 keys used to be worth). That isn't the case. If you argue that metal is declining in value, you'd have trouble explaining how the price of most normal hats has stayed the same.

It's a special case because tf2 uses commodities as currency. if ref, keys, bills and buds acted like $1, $5, $20, $100 (perfectly elastic conversions), it would be much easier to describe the state of the economy.

Compare this.

Keys were 2.66. Selling 5 gets you 10 Ref and 10 Rec which is 13 Ref and 1 Rec.

3.77 times 5 is 15 ref and 10 Rec and 5 Scraps which is 18 Ref and 2 Rec and 2 Scraps. The difference is 5 Ref 1 Rec 2 Scrap. People with a lot of keys could make huge profit. Even though I do sell keys for 3.66 or above, which I don't now, at least I'm not denying that I'm a cheap bastard and greedy bitch.

I see no need for another price change, price was just set a little over 2 hours ago. The price of keys has finally reached a stable range. If few people choose to overpay for keys then let them. And I have to disagree about 3.66 sales being extinct. Many people still sell for 3.66, maybe not on outpost (greedy little fucks) but on trading servers.

You're not helping. A bunch of your 3.77 sellers have no posts or adds, and most of the 3.88 sellers have either spam or offers of 3.66 ref for their keys. In short, you put up a bunch of defective and misleading evidence to support a price hike. And the fact that you don't put up any buyers is giving us only half the picture. What price do you think the 3.77 sellers are buying at? Think about it.

Does anyone actually CHECK the proof for key suggestions anymore? Because I just clicked on about six or seven random trades of 3.88 "proof" and only saw two confirmed trades. The one trade even admits to not selling any at 3.88 in their own notes.

there's an estimated what, 23 million accounts? 3 million accounts tracked by stats? just how many alt account do people think are out there? ref farmers are a massive minority who only walk among other ref farmers and so have an inflated view of alt accounts and their effect on the economy. but it will keep getting brought up because these discussion only happen in trading circles so the feedback loop continues and the majority of people effected have no idea this even happens.

How many times must I explain how the Steam Market came into effect in mid-December, AFTER keys were already skyrocketing?

In 2011, keys went up during halloween but went back down after the event.

In 2012, keys went up during halloween but NEVER went down afterwards.

If they would have gone down and THEN rose mid-decemeber when Steam introduced the market then I could see your point. However, that didn't happen. It's easier to believe that keys were going up for a different reason, a more obvious reason. One that should be slapping you in the face at this point. And that is because Sellers wanted them to, and buyers will pay it. Anything else?

The sellers are selling deliberately high to make a profit which starts the process of suggesting a new price. There will always be buyers of ridiculous prices. If someone really wants a key to unbox a salv crate they just found they will pay what people are asking.

And here I am to point out again why this cycle makes absolutely zero sense.

The main reason -the ONLY- why keys exist is to open crates. Since the only way that you can possibly gain any profit off of unboxing is to unbox black or white paint, unbox a salvage strange item, unbox one of the few stranges that is worth over a key (which there are very few of) or the aforementioned unusual.

Here is the problem that I see here:

WHY THE BLOODY HELL ARE WE CONCERNED OFF OF PROFITING OFF OF A CRATE?

You see, this is the problem that rose when only certain item were being purchased early last year, when the only crates that were being bought were #1, 19, 20, 21, and 30. and the only other items being bought were bills and buds. The same thing is happening again.

It use to be that unboxing was for the shits ad giggles. Now due to this nonsense this site started, it has now boiled down to people hoping that the unbox a burning Team Captain off of the #31 that is in their backpack. It is pathetic.

Pretty much, however, despite how it is the key traders are spamming that refined is going down in value (note how only key traders are saying this), it has gone down to getting more bang out of the buck.

Equally frustrating is that there will be an influx of around 50000 or so next month, and more buyers are turning to real world cash not because they agree with key traders, but the fact that THEY DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU CLOWNS.

Oh, one more thing. With all of these key trades being spammed below the suggestion, how many of them are actual trades and not people trolling that they sold at that higher price?

February is a short month, and usually at the end of a month towards the beginning of the month are when people get paid. When that happens, expect an influx of keys.

Outpost traders always try to top backpack.tf prices by 1 scrap; when backpack.tf adjusts to this, they raise their prices by a scrap; It's a never-ending cycle of shit. There's no way in hell that I'm buying keys for 3.88 ref. I miss it when they were only 2.33. There are also more keys in circulation now then there were when the demand was high, so there's no excuse for everyone to say that "The demand is high, supply is low." Downvoted simply because you can find people selling keys for $1.30-$1.40, while ref is only $0.38-$0.40 (I think). Even in the worst case scenario, keys only add up to being about 3.68 ref, given that they're being sold for $1.40, and ref is $0.38.

Every time we boost the price by a scrap, all of the sellers immediately go and bump their prices by 2-3 scrap higher than the suggested price. People immediately see these prices and boost THEM. Can anyone else see this cycle?

I don't know how long it will take for people to finally realize that it's this sites fault why the prices are climbing so fast. And I know I'm going to get downvoted to hell. But trust me, if the other spreadsheet could have been easily killed off by a single reddit post, this one can too.

Obviously before backpack.tf there were already prices established. I just wanted to point out that the trend is ridiculous as it is atm lol. It took 3 months since backpack.tf record the price of keys to be 2.66 for it to increase by 5 scraps. Now it's only taken 1 month for it to increase by 6 more scraps. Meh.

Late Summer of last year I noticed the price to be 2.77 Ref a key ( A Two scrap increase since June when it was 2.55). From August of 2012 to February 2013 (6 months), the price has risen to 3.77. In six months, the price would have officially increase by 2 Ref every year (Ratio of 2:1).

Okay, you vote for a higher price. TF2OutPost folks are generally only in it for themselves, so what will happen is they'll bump up their prices for the sake of profit so the can go and Quick-buy more keys to sell at their ridiculous prices.

This key madness needs to stop...Yes refined is losing value but the price has changed 3 times in the past 2 weeks!

Keys can still be easily found at 3.77, price changes are not necessary.

i know my rep is horrible, mostly because i would rather actually trade and leave the price to those who know better (also i suck at economics). but from a trader who owns much more keys than metal, this has got to stop. The more and more keys go up the more and more trading becomes harder for the little guys. Not to mention this is just ridiculous, a rise in price of a CURRENCY of 50% in 3 months, and you want to ADD to this?

Keys at most should be 4 refined metal because since refined is about 0.37-0.40 and you can get keys for maybe 1.30-1.60 so the limit should be 4 refined. Soon enough the increase in key prices may cause a crash which hopefully leads to people having to sell keys at a more fair and stable price.

This crash that people are hoping for isn't actually going to help poorer people.

You know what it's gonna do?

It's gonna make the packs of poorer people worthless.

See, if you've got a lot of keys, you've got a lot of unusuals,

or you want unusuals or promos.

You don't buy the 1.33 or 1.66 hats.

The keys won't get circulated back in.

The crash will make the poor poorer and the rich as comfortable as they were before.

Also, I have not seen a SINGLE suggestion to DECREASE the value of keys. All you need to do is provide links of SANE, price-obeying people.

you say that they sell for over this price cause that is what traders do, they try to get the most amount of profit possible

if we just raise the key price higher, people will be asking 4 ref+ for keys. I have already seen some go for 4 ref and this needs to stop now

This is so stupid. I made a deal today where I paid in metal where keys were requested and the trader happily agreed to value keys at 3.66.

If all we're going to do is adjust the price upward based on the posted ads then you're going to have to discount all trading that occurs off of the outpost I guess. Hard to prove if any good prices for keys happen on say the classifieds because if someone buys it in seconds of it being posted nobody will ever know. Most of the good deals on this site in fact are seen and removed much too fast unless you're the lucky guy who refreshes right when it goes up. These price hikes need to end just as much as the use of the word "proof" does.

Im tired of key inflation, but this is really good proof and It should be up voted whether I like the price or not.

Well this didn't take long to escalate.

In the thread: whining people who apparently do not understand economics. This surge in key prices is due to inelastic demand for keys in conjunction with inflation of metal (Steam Market).

Back on topic, I do believe that this suggestion is a bit premature, as keys do not sell quite easily for 3.88, TF2Finance is suggesting a value in the current range, and the last suggestion was accepted only a few days ago. However, I'm certain that this suggestion will be accurate within a week or two.

I've come from a broken time machine in 2032. Wow, things are much different back here than it is in the future. Right now, Burning TC's are going for 1 scrap each and Ghastlierest Gibuses are going for 108 Buds, and Buds are like 72 keys. Ridiculous, right?

This cycle with people raising the backpack prices has to stop because people see backpack prices went up then they add a rec to the price saying it will be there someday which means backpack updates to that price and another scrap or two is added
