I called this months ago, like in November/December and got downvoted. Matter of fact, I even said that backpack.tf was influencing outpost traders and a mod on here said that was unlikely :3

Ok, can we stop using outpost as proof for key suggestions? We all know outpost sellers are wankers anyway. Not sure how to prove this, but I see people selling keys for 3.66 all the time on trade servers. It's pretty much a given fact that outpost sellers sell for a scrap more than the backpack.tf price of keys. Keys are in very high demand (and don't get me started on the whole supply/demand thing. There are more keys than there were a few months ago, and the demand hasn't really changed), so people are willing to pay more. They buy the keys, price goes up, sellers raise their prices by a scrap, the process repeats, ad Infinium. What we need to do is boycott keys. Let's start a revolution! If we can get enough people to refuse to buy keys for more than, say, 3.33, the price will eventually go down. If we keep doing this, we may return to the golden age (long before my time, mind you) of 2.55 per key.

Only when keys reach high enough will this happen sir... you do know that right? Also this site is based on proving an items price with trades such as those from the outpost. If they were not successful this would have never been suggested. This price range is actually becoming fair now because I have been able to sell several keys at 3.88 and actually some of the traders come to me happy that i am selling for this price. So yes keys will stop selling maybe.... maybe.... or we will see tour tickets becoming a new currency.

I myself don't see a big problem even if keys were 5 Ref each. Yes, you'd have to sell more stuff to get same number of keys, but on the other hand, you get more for those keys too...

That is a very good point. A high key price would especially benefit a trader like me. I buy keys from the market and sell them for the bottom key value, then use the metal to buy marketable items, sell them on the market, rinse and repeat. However, my concern is more for the new traders, especially the ones who didn't receive the advice to buy a high-value item from the store, such as keys, when they upgrade to premium. We were all new traders before. Starting off is pretty fucking hard.

The only reason key prices keep going up is because a vicious cycle has been created where price-checking sites raise the value of keys resulting in high ballers/profit whores increasing their prices ever so slightly. This in turn results in another suggestion to raise prices, which passes, and the cycle continues.

this is irrelevant. do not translate these values into the real world because everything you can buy with keys in the tf2 economy is virtual. everything is relative and needs to be treated that way (at least until you cash out or sell a high tier unusual)

the moment you convert to real world currency things start to be silly. i'll could skip lunch today and buy a bill hat instead. after a few weeks of eating poptarts for lunch i could have buds and crazy unusuals but that's fucking stupid. trading in tf2 is a game in itself that i enjoy.

as i mentioned in another comment i am amazed at the parallels in this economy to that of the real world.

think of this another way, if a regular tf2 player gets 2.66 refined worth of drops per month and lets say the price of one ref is 40 cents, then a regular player "earns" $1 per month expending 10 hours per week to play the game. that's 40 human hours devoted to earning $1. he therefore earns 2.5 cents an hour :)

meanwhile Long "earns" $17 in just a few hours by pushing pricing around. lets say it took him a total of 4 man hours to sell his buds, get his key "evidence" from outpost (quickly becoming my most despised site in tf2), and engage commenters in these suggestions on bp.tf. he has earned $4.25 per hour. or 170x what the average tf2 player "earns" :)

Got it backwards. You buy from scrap.tf at 3.77 sell to scrap.tf at 3.66. They make 1 scrap profit per key but offer deals when you sell 5+ keys at a time.

my point is, he was on his way to make a suggestion to lower the price of the buds he just sold for keys and later this one to bring the price of keys up... here he is trying to make it sound as if he was innocent of suggesting a bud price drop.

He told me he was going to do the buds suggestion last night over chat. I didn't know about this key suggestion until this morning. Frankly I do not believe Long should have made it. The mass buds selling on the other hand was triggered by Long viewing tf2finance. It was already 27.14 keys before Long sold them all meaning that the price was closer to 27 keys.

What people who complain about the amount of keys in the sugesters backpack dont understand is that since keys are used as a curency, the price of ANYTHING valued in keys is also bumped up. Unusuals, popular craft hats, Black and white paint. practically everything with a value above 8 or so ref.

It all started a long time ago during the 2012 Halloween update. That is when things really got stupid. There are several theories about how it got this high.

Some say that there is too much metal because of people who have several alt accounts.

Some say the Steam Market is controlling this price.

I just think that sellers are getting greedy and buyers are getting desperate.

The biggest reason is that backpack.tf is trusted as a true source of pricing knowledge and sellers try to make the most out of what they have by asking 1 scrap over; hence the "slow" creep of the price.

Keys had been stable at 2.33, and then at 2.44-2.55~ for months......and no increase at all.... Then around halloween, the demand increased and the market place was added.

So, its clearly not backpack.tf's doing since keys were stable for quite some time....So blaming bp.tf for the sudden rise in key price is completely absurd.

I'm not blaming backpack.tf I understand that prices aren't changed by backpack.tf but instead reported and tracked. I'm blaming the sellers for asking more than the actual value of the key.

Incidentally, why is it then only keys and not other material that are also being tracked? It may be just the fact that keys have the most possible fluctuation, but still...

Not entirely useless I bought a pink bills for 29.44 a few days ago when keys were 3.55-3.77. But that's only one case and will probably never happen again.

It's still easy enough to buy keys at 3.66 on trade servers, it's just that outpost goes on what b.tf says. Sure on outpost alone the range is heavily between 3.77-3.88 but I see no reason to change it from 3.66-3.88 seeing as it's still completely possible to buy at 3.66

It hasn't hit 3.8 yet. Current price is still between 3.66 and 3.88. Just like last time.

Yeah down vote 3.66 is difficult, but still very possible. Also because people always ask 1 scrap more than suggested price on outpost. By continuing to raise the suggested they will continue to ask 1 scrap more.

I haven't used ref to buy keys since the Christmas update was over. It's either Key+ items with minimum involvement of metal or items worth less than a key, which isn't affected by key prices at all.

I don't particularly think outpost is always a good place to check for key prices. I vote for items if I know I could get an item for that price, and seeing as I bought a key for 3.66 (I no longer have it, bought a strange Ambassador with it). I feel the suggested price is not accurate.

You can only see trades on outpost that haven't sold. See Uranium's post. Plenty on outpost within 2 hours at 3.66 ref. Also can get for 3.66 ref on trading post.

3.66 is hard but not impossible. I see several a day on trading post for this. While outpost may be the largest trade hub, we shouldn't base our prices solely on it. It isn't the best place to buy keys. All of these in the last day.

The problem is this, There are plenty of buyers on OP who are offering 3.77 Refined, so there really is no need to sell for less.

But that logic works with everything. Why are there variabilities in prices for anything? Sometimes people just don't understand the market. Sometimes people have a narrow market (on trading post keys go 3.66-3.77, outpost 3.66-3.88). Sometimes people just need metal really fast. Whatever the case, I've seen just as many or more trades successful at 3.66 as at 3.88. I think the current range is good. Also, please see Uranium's post below.

All selling at or even below 3.66, gathered by watching OP for almost 2h. God knows how many I missed. Yes, they sell quickly, but that's to be expected from the low end for a high volume item like Keys. TF2Finance is at 3.77 exactly at the time of this post.

I didn't bother to track 3.77 sales, there is a lot of them and many more new ones open than new 3.88 sales.

But by the time this suggestion will be decided, Keys may indeed not sell for less than 3.77. Guess you are making predictions again in the hope you're right by the time this gets decided.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The only way you can show evidence of selling at 3.66 is by doing what you did. Outpost doesn't keep records of sales like trading post. On trading post, you can clearly see all closed trades and that equal numbers or more are selling at 3.66 as are sold at 3.88. Thank you, sir, for taking the time and effort of compiling these.

But you are raising the low end. And how many did you sell? I bet you didn't sell any. Probably, because you don't need Metal unlike the many that do sell for the low end and rather sell at 3.88 but more slowly.

Put up 3.77 + 1 Weapon and 3.88 and see how that goes. I bet you will see things are a lot slower, supporting that the new sweet spot you suggest (3.83) by raising the low end is not more common than your new low end, which it should be.

That is interesting. But I agree with Uranium that you posting at selling for 3.77 ref doesn't really prove much since thats part of both ranges. Do the same test at selling for 3.88 ref (which is in your range), and you will have convinced me.

This statement right here is what is making and breaking the market. I can take that its your duty to report prices. I get that. But, for every suggestion that is made, the price only rises. I am going to get so much shit for saying this but truth is: It can be helped. WE ARE A GUIDE TO TRADING. Everything we do reflects on the market. When we say it is rising, it rises. When we say it falls, it falls. Now, we cannot move prices down without reason. But, i think it would be better not to suggest anymore key raises. I notice even the rich are starting to be a little wary. They know the price of keys are rising, thus metal is becoming useless. Did anyone notice? Keys are worth more than hats. What does that mean? the amount it takes to craft a hat, is the same as or less than a key.

As i said, we cannot do much. Suspending key price changes doesn't mean Keys will be capped to the backpack.tf price. It could go up or down based on the demand of the free market, temporarily without the distortion of future expectations of a "guided" price increase from here.

It did happen in the U.S. It caused relative amounts of oil to decrease and thus a shortage at the pumps. The government had to institute a law that said even license plates can buy gas on one day and odds on the other. There were lines around the block of people trying to buy gas.

There's no real reason to push this higher. If everyone one is worried it will hit 4-5 ref then stop helping push the price higher. Tell the idiots no.

When is the tf2 community going to realize that metal is, in fact, a worthless entity? Weapons are awarded to the player simply by playing the game, thus metal is essentially free. The only thing that could possibly give metal value is the time needed to get weapons to drop, and even then, there are idle servers for that purpose. No amount of metal will equate to an entity with a set dollar value.

This is why Valve created the community market. Metal is purely to be used as a crafting utility, which explains why metal and regular weapons are not sellable on the community market.

Metal is worthless except in direct exchange for items that do not have a dollar value already assigned to them. I give it 6 months before the entire tf2 economy crashes.

Already made a Key-suggestion, had tons of proof but it got still downvoted to hell. Two days later, a random person comes up, takes my proof, adds a bit, makes a new suggestion and tada.. It gets accepted. He also got a ton of upvotes.

How this all happens:

1) Backpack.tf is at a price. (let's say 3.33 in this example)

2) TF2Outpost Traders sell for let's say 3.44 - 3.66

3) Poor guys with no keys get pissed off from hunting keys on search and decide to buy some keys at a higher price.

4) Those trades with successful sales are then used as proof to raise the price even higher.

5) Repeat Process.

while i understand the proof provided and understand backpack trying to reflect market price i do feel there is a huge circle-jerk happening. outpost sellers and sellers in general sell above backpack/sheet and can easily cite the rising cost of keys, as they have been jumping at a faster and faster pace. tf2 finance then records the cost of keys at above the median on backpack. prompting a price raise, then sellers also raise costs citing higher backpack price. then tf2 finance rinse repeat till key prices go nuts.given tf2 finance cited as proof it would be interesting experiment to fix key prices admin side and see if that has an effect on tf2 finance data, given people who cite backpack.

either way the speed at which key prices are rising seem alarming. perhaps a mandatory x day waiting period between each key price suggestion. or perhaps the blasphemy of not allowing users to price keys and instead give admins sole discretion on key prices and only key prices.

The mods, I hope, can obviously see the trend on pricing here. Often I see people selling keys only to be asked what they want for them. The common answer is usually something like, "3.XX, sorry but they went up again according to X website". Websites like this lock prices in place, keys will always have a high and a low price and when the main price goes up here the key sellers will raise their high price to sell for more profit only causing a vote to be brought here to raise the price again. We never had this problem last year before this site was popular.

Outpost isnt a reliable source, 99,9999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the traders there are greedy. They use backpack.tf as a reference ( enven though backpack isnt that precise)

Random Guy 1 -> Check backpack.tf for price reference, and keys increased in price, therefore, so his trade will sell key for new price

Random Guy 1 -> Sells key at 3.7

Random Guy 2 -> Buys key at 3.7

Random Guy 3 -> See that people are buying key for new high price and increase his price too and sells it with success

Random Guy 4 -> Since he's greedy, increase his key price to 3.8 and someone buy it

Random Guy 5 -> Same logic as Random Guy 3

10 Min later, shit-ton of trades with new key price

Random Guy 6 -> See a lot of trade with new price, and come up with this in a price suggestion

REPEAT FOREVER

Ok, so, keys were stable at 2.44-2.55 for months, and guess what, people used bp.tf back then as well...So blaming it on bp.tf is fucking ludacris......

The fact of the matter is, if bp.tf were to change the price to a flat 3 ref, then newer traders would sell keys at 3 ref, and within an hour they would all be bought up and selling for 4 refined.....Don't be stupid...bp.tf does NOT control the market...

And, if there are so many buyers at 3.77 on OP, then there is NO reason to sell keys for less, leading to a low end of 3.77....If 3.66-3.88 was the correct range then i would be able to buy hundreds at 3.77 with relative ease, yet i only managed to buy a couple yesterday at 3.77, and 3.88 sell out almost instantly (So quickly in-fact that i bumped my sell price up to 4 Refined, and i've already sold a bunch at 4 Ref).

Everyone is all over the OP for trying to raise the price but no one seems to even consider that it takes two to tango. If people would simply stop buying the damned things when they go up the price would drop. I stopped when they hit 3.33 and just use metal to get everything I buy.

Yes, the values of metal have gone down, but with very little effort I get a fair deal for metal on everything other than keys. That says it in a nutshell for me.

Back in October I laughed at the idea of keys being actually sellable at 4 refined, now I just feel stupid.

Its like the real world, CEO's/Upper-class get richer, while the poor/lower class stay the same, but guess what, its the upper-class that provides jobs for the lower class, so if the upper class wasn't making money than they would stop hiring and the poor would just get poorer (and be unemployed).
