Suggestion: Mann Co. Supply Crate Key at 5–5.11 ref

Long's competing suggestion demonstrates that selling at 5.22-5.33 ref is possible. So while the odd trade may happen for less than 5, they're also happening for above 5.11. It'd be impossible to cover all happening trades without doing something ridiculous like 4-6 ref. A good range requires far more analysis than 'are any trades happening at all outside of it'.

Both of the suggestions at the time of this writing do not show any proof that justifies the removal of the lower range. I have little doubt that key prices are moving away from the old lower range, but neither suggestion gives any proof for such a justification.

Keys were being sold for 4.66 on Taco's yesterday. I'm sure this goes on elsewhere. Probably wiser and more sincere to not push up the lower end unnecessarily.

It's much too early for 5.33. I'm sure what'shisface will go to both key suggestions with maybe 15 or so links that show people selling for under 5 refined. Although, all of the links will have been sold out instantly and each will have had only 1 or 2 keys to begin with. Still.

It's not too early for 5.33. I offered keys for sale for offers, and got offers of 5.22 to 6 ref. 6 was an anomaly, but 5.22 to 5.33 has been a consistent selling price for me.

Equal amounts of trades are happening at 4.77-5 refined and 5-5.33 refined as consistently proven by what'shisface (seriously what's that guy's name?). That makes 5-5.11 refined the average price.

4.77 is not happening unless that seller lives under a rock. Buying for 5 ref is almost impossible.

Hello! I am Asterian Starfall and today I will be talking to you about a topic most of us simply hate: Backpack.tf Key Suggestions.

Before we can begin to analyze where we are now, we have to go back to the beginning of this. Although there is no definative way of judging when this all began, I think we can safely say that this all began back in late October, early November of 2012, which was when backpack.tf started to become popular. This popularity started because people were tired of spreadsheets that could be easily manipulated and controlled for a single person or group's interests. At the same time, key prices began to rise slightly. Some people, including the administrators of backpack.tf, attribute this to the fact that new halloween items were now in circulation, as well as festive items that were on the way. While this in a perfect world would make sense, it doesn't quite work in our world. If this statement were true, keys would have stopped rising after christmas and would have stalled at about 3.55 each, before finally going back down to their original 2.77 price, which leads us to this question: Why did they continue to rise? Well, we know that the halloween/festive items didn't actually influence the price, and we also know that backpack.tf became popular around the same time keys began to rise. This is very revealing, especially when you take into account that the public at large does not control backpack.tf's prices. As of 5/6/2013, the admins, or the people who control whether price suggestions pass or not, consists of the following people:

Soundtrack, Sir J-j-jon, shenanigans, Chief Shoe, Michael Puddington, cleverpun, Mr. Bucket, A Distinctive Lack of Vincent, Brad Pitt.

Vincent seems to be the one who accepts most of the key suggestions, and his net worth in TF2 also equals $2600 USD, thanks to keys and unusuals. However, to be fair, he may just be a very good trader, but that seems unlikely, as his backpack was worth only a third that amount less than 3 months ago. So what does this mean? Backpack.tf started getting popular at around the same time as keys began to rise. We also know that the admins have complete control over the site, and thus have a virtual stranglehold on the market, which influences roughly 8 million TF2 players. People are now trusting a monopolistic market, which is what they hoped to avoid by joining backpack.tf in the first place. So what about the suggesters of key prices? Unfortuneately, it seems they are in the same boat as most of the admins. Every single admin has a net worth of at least $1000 USD, and the price suggesters themselves have a sizeable amount of keys. Although there have been some key suggestions recently by the community, the three most pronounced are:

Long218, Mattje, Hatch Rawer Beryl.

Long has made the majority of the recent key suggestions, and he himself has about 600 keys, as of 5/6/2012. Most of these suggestions are hated by the community and recieve far more downvotes than upvotes, but the suggestions usually pass anyway. Again, this is because an admin is chosen to pass or deny the suggestion; one person influences whether or not to give someone and probably themselves and additional 50 or so in refined metal, which is USD translates to about $18. Long was however banned from making key suggestions for a short time, as the community caught on to the fact he was manipulating the price. While this is true, most people miss the bigger picture, which is admins control everything on this site, and one person determines 8 million people's fate. Sadly, greed has overcome, and keys have risen to over double their original value in less than half a year. Going back to Long being banned. The admins were profitting greatly from Long, so why did they ban him? The answer to this is rather simple: To create a false sense of security to the general public that they influence the price. As we can see, nothing is further from the truth.

Onward to Mattje. She has only made one key suggestion that has passed, so she's not entirely manipulating the price, but she does have the most expensive backpack is TF2 history; over $26000 USD. She had about 8,600 keys at the time of her suggestion, which passed a one scrap change. 8,600 x .11 x $1.50 USD = $1419 USD in pure profit.

Hatch Rawer Beryl is essentially Long with a different name. Whilst Long was banned, he stepped up and single-handedly raised key prices roughly 12% in less than one month.

So what is clear from this? We know that a select few individuals with corrupt intents control hundred of thousands, if not millions of dollars of virtual goods. These individuals rob the public of what little wealth they have left. They have a monopolistic stranglehold on the market, and have managed to convince the public that the public controls the market. This group is incredibly clever and have outsmarted 8 million people, and as long as we continue to believe we influence the price, we lend ourselves to being completely enslaved. They know this. They also know something that we must never know: If people ever realize that when we stop listening to them, their monopoly will collapse upon itself like a house of cards.

I'm sorry, but this bulky comment just isn't suitable for a key suggestion. Warning it as spam. If you'd like to discuss it on the forums, feel free, but this much clutter when it's not discussing the suggestion at hand is far, FAR too much.

This is a good range for keys right now. 5.33 is probably happening, but not very often. I've been trying to buy keys for 4.77 or 4.88 and haven't had any luck at all.

Keys at 5 are snapped up immediately. I also put up a few keys for sale at 5.11 and 5.22 and was added immediately.

I also sold 5 keys at 5.22 today and one key at 5.33. The first three I sold this morning within a few minutes of posting them, the last 3 took a couple hours for some reason. I posted them in 2 separate trades of 3 keys each trade, separated by a few hours.

I don't know why 5 ref isn't the low range already. This should've been done weeks ago.

You already got warned on the other key suggestion for posting useless information. Do you really want to go for a ban because you cannot control yourself in a public setting? You violated the very first rule that should not even need to be a rule because its just common sense.

1. Be respectful of other users at all times. Insulting, harassing or general rudeness towards other users is not tolerated and may result in a warning or a ban.

To be honest, you lost me at tf2finance... It can easily be manipulated (many people don't even use it, most found out from these key suggestions), and we have no exact way to confirm if it can be used as proof. Also, I wish admins could keep in mind that some of these proofs on the recent suggestions are "profit trades".

Went through each and every link to ensure there weren't false links. There were a small handful of links that were from the same user as a prior link, but not a significant amount- maybe a half dozen, a drop in the pool of provided links. The vast majority are still looking to buy at the listed prices. The only links that didn't fit under the appropriate headings were as follows:

In other words, all checked out, except for a few that had INCREASED what they had wanted to give in metal for keys.

Now, I have to emphasize that the listed links here are all BUYER trades. These are all people ready to give the listed amount of metal for a key. The numbers of people readily willing to buy at 5 ref are tremendous, and there's no reason for it to be less than bottom range. As further provided, there's a steady amount of buyers ready to buy at 5.11 to boot, so there's no reason for that to not be included as well.

Given all this, I will be accepting. To hopefully field some of the questions that are commonly or can be expected to be brought up:

"Why take 4.77 out of range when some people still sell for that?"

Multiple reasons.

First off, when you sell for less than what is readily available through buyer trades, you are selling unnecessarilly low- quickselling, as some like to call it, though quite frankly you'd have sold exactly as quick as at the slightly higher buyer trade price because that's keys for you.

Secondly, the small number of trades happening for less are vastly outnumbered by the sheer quantity of buyers wanting to pay higher to get that key. That makes it clear they are anomalies.

Thirdly, while there are trades happening for less than this range, there are also trades happening for HIGHER, as demonstrated in the competing suggestion: backpack.tf/vote/id/5187958b4bd7b87f14000006 . Not ALL trades can be covered by range, what's important is to try to get the range where the bulk of trades are happening. That can be difficult to define with keys in their current volatility, but operating around the highest steady BUYER prices is a safe approach.

"Why accept this over the competing suggestion?"

5.22 ref is too steadily available among sellers for 5.33 to need to be in range. Not to mention that it is better to be on the convservative side until prices stabilize. Finally, this was far better proven and took a far more thorough look at the market.

"Why accept this when 4.88-5.11 was ultimately rejected?"

Upping the low range from 4.77 to 4.88 was negligible and would have resulted in 5-5.11 being proposed the next day regardless. Not to mention that it was very poorly proven compared to this one which thoroughly demonstrates the need for 5 ref at the bottom range. Finally, this price change should FINALLY get the site back on track with key prices after having lagged behind so long and should put an end to the nonstop wave of fiddling but technically accurate key suggestions for a while. Or I can only pray.

"Why accept when votes are negative?"

Because people want bp.tf to miraculously save what's been happening with keys by setting a lower refined price or not changing key->refined prices here anymore. People are voting on what they want, not on what's actually happening. They can't be blamed, no one really likes what's happening with keys. No, not even key resellers, who now need far more transactions for their profiteering to earn an extra key compared to before. Whatever the votes, the proof here is solid and undeniable. The best that can be done as counterproof is to show a small handful of links of keys trading for lower, and I've explained why that has no impact on a proper range above. For the integrity of the site, accuracy must be taken over the anger over what's been happening with key prices.
