Slowly it gets really scary. There is not a week ago that the key price was increased, and again the next? The proof is not bad, but honestly. The buyers pay the 6 ref for a key need of quick keys and have no time to look around. I buy my key for 5.66, and I am successful. Although it takes a little longer, but one key per day it's been. So what now, the metal has to go up even higher and not the key, where does it end. Key soon priceless?

You know, as terrible and unwanted 6 ref keys are, most, if not all traders value keys at 6 ref when they are trading, even if they don't normally buy or sell keys. It's already "accepted" in a sense, but at the same time it's not.

This economy has some weird logic behind it.

Not to mention the fact that 99% of people who support the cause of making keys go back to 2.33 would most likely try and sell for 6 ref to make profit. It's all about the point of view that really shows your true perspective.

We mostly do it cause we dont want to give a buttload of change to people paying 6 ref per key because they dont feel like smelting down a ref + a rec

My opinion on the matter is similar to the Tinkerbell effect. People believe that keys are going up so , they sell high and people want to prepare (such as myself) so they buy high. Which would provide more proof for keys to go up :P.

In my opinion keys will top off at 7.3 ref ($2.49). Does that price sound familiar? If you have ever bought a key in-game it should. The price of a key is going to keep going up until it is just as expensive as buying it from the in-game store. It will not surpass the amount it is being sold at in the in-game store however because once people start buying it for themselves instead of trading for them (because it is more economical), the price will have to go down for people to start trading for them again. So 7.3 ref is the magic number.

I am just saying that no matter how much lower metal becomes keys will still increase to $2.49. So a key won't necessarily be 7.3 ref by the time it becomes $2.49 (it could be 10 ref), but it will be whatever the metal equivalent to $2.49 is in the future. I am just saying what the price in money would be, in metal, by today's price of metal.

Billybobbeh, there is no price cap for the key. As long as the price (in ref) of the key goes up, the value of the the ref depreciates, meaning it goes down. There is no limit as to how much the value of the ref can go down.

There is no fixed price cap, but if it gets more expensive (in real world money) to trade for it and cheaper (in real world money) to simply buy it from the in-game store, then that is what people are going to do. So because it is more economical to buy it from the in-game store, the trading price will not surpass it because no one will be able to trade it (sell it) for more than it can be simply purchased for ($2.49). The theory here is that people will buy an item from the least expensive source. So if there are two sources of the same item, then the more expensive provider will have to adapt to the least expensive provider to be able to compete.

There is no price drop cap for the ref. There is an inflation of ref and not enough keys. Before, there were lots of people buying and selling keys, but now there are hardly any, Even those that are selling are selling at above the price. We need to neutralize some of the ref. A LOT of it.

I totally agree. There are obviously more ref being created from crafting and no way to get rid of them (other than crafting hats and other items). However, more people craft metal than they do items with their metal, so the number of ref in existance keeps increasing. People can trade away their ref, but it will still exist in someone else's backpack. So I don't believe that the price of ref will start going up any time soon, if ever. The only drop cap that I can see happening with ref is when it gets so ridiculously cheap and useless in trading that it no longer becomes worth while to craft metal with weapons anymore, so the amount of ref in existence will increase at a slower rate because fewer people will be crafting ref, thus the rate at which the price of ref is dropping will slow down. But that is far in the future, and may not even happen like that, I am just speculating. In the meantime, perhaps if Valve made it so that it took less ref to craft a hat or something of that sort, people would spend more ref than they create, so the amount of metal in existence would decrease.

1. People say this ruins the economy. Please show me how it does.

2. Valve loves this, because it means f2ps have to buy many keys in order really get started in the market. They can't simply buy one key then trade their metal in from drops.

3. Once keys get too expensive (i.e. S.F's and other high-value items are worth a handful of keys), Valve will just make a new way to get items that doesn't involve keys. Keys will become like bill's or buds, and a new item will be the chief currency.

Agreed on number 2. Valve loves this. New players who just got started and don't waste to waste money won't like this. The value and rise of the ref is not proportional the value and rise of the key. There are too many ref, so when there's too much of something, the price goes down. Personally, in order to save the TF 2 economy, we need an immediate neutralization of 10% of the ref in circulation. That's a bit .. bad for some, I guess, but we need to make those sacrifices for the good of all. Like I said earlier , since Valve turned TF 2 into a F2P, they depend on users buying limited items. So we can't expect much help from them. Maybe a big raffle hosted by backpack.tf with rewards of ref might work, in which a percent of the ref given for a ticket is destroyed. Just my thoughts.

Outpost is, sadly, the most used trade site. Additionally, backpack classifieds leave no proof and bazaar trades are often messy (many users don't know how to use it correctly.) as a result, most proof comes from Outpost. There isn't really a better way.

TF2outpost is known for all the sharkers/lowballers and profit sharks tho.

There are still tons of keys sold for 5,77 and 5,88. You can't find as many links on the outpost only because they get insta-sold. And what does that tell you? No, it doesn't tell you that 5,77 is too low, it actually tells you that people like this price. You can go to the outpost and find 10x more links of keys UNSOLD for 10 ref.

Any screenshots from your inventory history of you "just" now buying 4 keys for 4.66 refined each? I could direct you to pretty much any key buying trade on Outpost and they'd be paying at least 5 refined and usually more. If you truly believe that allowing newer traders to undersell their keys for more than they could perceivably get is a good idea in under to stop key "inflation", then you're terribly mistaken. The only people who would benefit are the traders buying those keys while you're left with newer traders taking a loss and thus further widening the gap between rich and poor. backpack.tf is meant to reflect current price, and if people are willing to pay 6 refined for a key, then these newer traders need to know that, so they can get the most for their keys. Its not gonna be the experienced trader who'll be negatively affected if the price of keys artificially drop, it'll be the ones just starting out and trying to make it in this economy.

That is quite true considering the fact that the admin (most likely cleverpun, he is very involved with key suggestions) is the one person who makes the final choice, granted they have to take all points into consideration, they can let a terrible suggestion pass if they want it to and that's where backpack.tf pretty much destroys the point of voting, In a regular voting system, the most voted wins but here that does not seem to apply despite that is what voting is for. so the people can decide on what they want instead of others deciding for them

Votes are only one part of a series of checks and balances (which also includes mods, comments, and proof). Of course the most voted doesn't win--if the mods were short-sighted enough to do that then keys would still be at a ref because of ballot stuffing.

And I don't know what you are talking about; I have only ever accepted two key suggestions in my entire tenure as a mod (give or take one).

The only thing that could make keys drop is if people weren't so openly buying for higher and higher amount.

It may be BS or not but keys will not be going down for a while yet, not until a large majority of people start to say "that's it! I'm not going to pay 10 refined for 1 key I will just buy them with what I have in my wallet", at this point traders will be forced to drop the price of their keys in order to make at least one sale. it is at this point will we see the keys drop in price again. although we will probably never see it back to 2.33. we may see it go down to 4.33 - 4.66 which is very good considering the current predicament it is in

You do now that Keys will not go to that extent, it will go to a point where it will be cheaper to buy the keys for cash instead of metal, at that point people will avoid trading at the metal price but instead go for the cash price, at this point traders will drop the price of their keys in order to get a sale, price will drop and it will keep dropping until buying keys for metal becomes popular again, it will never go back to 2.66 but we can expect it to drop to at least 4.33 after a long enough period of time so Don't think it is all doom and gloom.

Valve has changed the weapon drop system a bit to make it so you can't idle and get free metal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't keys be gradually deflating in metal by now?

Massive idle farmers seem to still be capable of circumventing Valve's "fix". Actually, it looks like there's just as much metal coming into existence as before.

And the mods that accepts/declines this suggestion are well over 18 years old. You should do some background check before you make rash assumptions.

You actually have no idea of what happened, do you? Long218 was trade restricted. He was never banned. He was never marked on steamrep or on his steam profile as ever being trade banned. No one knows if he is still trade restricted, but it appeared to be indefinite.

Would you please stop providing misinformation? He has a Reddit Caution Tag on Steam Rep pre-dating any known involvement in carded keys and has to do with the possibility of Long knowingly buying a hijacked unusual. Long claimed that he had no idea that the unusual had been from a hijacked account, but the Reddit Admins wouldn't believe him. TF2outpost admins are never actually care about specifications. Long was not trade banned because he never received anything on his profile stating that. Therefore he was trade restricted. This all happened before your involvement in backpack.tf, so I would expect you to know since you weren't an active player, now for the love of god stop spreading misinformation. The very simple reason is that I provided proof that was strong and precise enough to prove my range, and pretty much most of the votes on key suggestions are soapboxers.
