It was released last year during Pyromania and since then its functionality has been unknown. That was, until this Halloween when Valve made it usable in the action slot in place of the normal spellbook that everyone got. The difference can be viewed here: http://imgur.com/a/4guDU

Jeez. I guess it's not really out of Valve's style to make something useful after a year of it being useless.

Valve made it useless even last year or since whenever that fire diary was released. It is us and backpack.tf to blame for setting up that terrible price.

backpack.tf has little effect on the price of an item. It has more to do with the speculation of what the Secret Diary might do that caused the price to rise. That's why the price of the Secret Diary spiked a little when MvM came out because people thought the Secret Diary may be involved for some secret mission. The price was all based on the speculation of value and backpack.tf simply recorded that. Now that it has been given a purpose, and that purpose has ended, I expect the price to drop quite a bit.

You said backpack.tf is to blame for the horrible price, when the fact of the matter is it had little to do with its value. If an item truly is not worth its value, then the price will lower. Just like all those expensive genuines (El Jefe, Merc's Muffler, Balloonicorn, etc), people continued to buy them for its price, so in essence it was worth that price, and thus not a terrible price. backpack.tf is not to blame for the spending behavior of buyers.

Please read again a bit more carefully - " It is us and backpack.tf to blame for setting up that terrible price."

And backpack.tf is equally at fault for not having checks in place to stop those stupid hype trains. That useless trash diary reached a whopping price just because of those only. 85% blame is on us users, just like I wrote initially, but you cannot acquit backpack.tf of their hindsight either.

The stats of an item can often be wrong as backpack.tf cannot search and account for items placed in private backpacks. However, it'd be a nice little touch by Valve if there were only 666 in effort to add to the idea that this item is related to Halloween.

I don't think this will be worth more than 4 keys in a few months..
