In a nutshell for tl;dr, very high demand, not enough in stock, and a few taking advantage of the prices. (Also, just take a look at your left at the advertisements on here, if too lazy.)

Why? Because this item has recently hit a very high amount of demands as of late. While you can get some sales for 2 keys (like I did) or lowers, there are a few of them reselling the item for higher. (In some cases, extremely higher than my maximum bid price.) I'm actually interested in this item, so I don't want to sell it for now, but there's many that are flipping this for a good buck.

(Let's be honest. I've seen too many low-balling offers of 1 Key or lower flooding this side of the market.)

Explanation of the Price

I think the sway is a bit large; however, there's reasons behind it. Not only that it's about equal drop from the boxes, but Engineer stuff have usually been a bit pricey in general compared to other classes. (Stranges, Cosmetics, etc.) So, it leads me to the conclusion there is a very high demand for this jacket, while there is the flip-side that people are taking advantage of the price at the same time. So, it leads to some people getting desperate and falling into bid wars. Hence, the reason why it's very swayed at the moment, but the puzzle pieces are starting to fall in now.

Selling =/= Sold

Need more proof at 3 keys.

I can confirm about 30% of them been sold. The rest has either been no response or confirmation at all, because some just don't update their threads.

The one about 4.5 keys have been the common trend. People offering a crap-ton of stuff just for the item or trying to haggle. I put a bid down of 3 keys to that person, person was indecisive about it, and he got an offer about a few minutes later for 4.5 keys worth of items and currency together. There are a few of using the "desperate" tactic, not caring about paying too much as long they get it. That's another reason of the inflation, not only just the merchants.

Not only just that, there are people on this website advertising for 3 keys already and there's quite a few of them too. Whether or not it's been confirmed, I can ensure that this is the new normal. This might be my first time on this website, but this isn't the first time I've worked on game economic websites or the first time actually dictating prices on an item. In fact, I have a good knowledge on that.

I recommend marking the ones that are unsold next to the links.

The reason why they're posted is because of their common trend of pricing.

Also, as I said... some of those uncertain ones could be sold already. People do use those websites and don't bother to read the offers or update their threads properly. Also, I can voucher that it took move a day or two of going through consistent offers just to get the right price.

I have to agree that the 2 Keys may be low; however, that was about 2 days ago when the price was suggested. Because the items are brand, spanking new and the price has been somewhat manipulated, the price has been going up, not down, while you have other items (like the Extra Layer) going down that were brand new from the same crates. Maybe it'll elevate out at this price and might need a revising in a week, two, maybe three.

Still support this range because 2 keys is definitely possible too, especially if you put up a buying trade (but those don't count as evidence anymore apparently?). I wouldn't say 2.4-ish keys is a quicksell either as it takes me some time and a couple bumps to sell for that each time, though maybe I'm just unlucky. Who knows.

All of the items in the nice crates have the same chance of coming out. Therefore they should all have a set price. Some all-classes can be a little higher as they are.

They don't all have the same demand.

Backpack.tf reflects "market" prices. Not "theoretical" prices or prices based on probability.

Engineer items are known to be the most expensive amongst the classes (maybe it could be Scout, but I don't play that class at all); however, it's also based on the cosmetic. The Engineer's Dogfighter is actually a very nice-looking item.

Well, my friend sold one for 3 keys and it is possible too sell it for that much even though somehow I bought mine really cheap XD upvote
