Ok so hear me out... I just returned after a long absence of being gone for nearly 1 1/2 years (since july 2013). Back when keys were 5 ref and everything was good, and prices of keys kept rising. But now I am not sure many people are aware of the issue it has brought around. Keys from July 2013 were 5.22 refined and refiend cost $0.37. Now if you look at the charts on backpack.tf, the price of keys and refined metal are inverse of eachother. This might not mean anythign to you except for you, you might not care. Until I tell you that those useless crates that hog your bp are worth keys now. Yes your crates are now worth keys because the prise of keys has risen. You probably think I'm high. As I explain remember these key facts- 1)As keys rise in value, refine drops in value 2)Nearly 300 crates minimum are sold each day for $0.03 . Refined is currently sold on average for $0.11 (3.66 crates). Now you may say, "well that doesnt change much", but it does. This means crates could be used as a form of currency strate across the board. Want a hat? The current price for a standard hat is 1.33 or 4 crates. Want a weapon? Well get 2 with 1 crate. And just like that, all of the items in tf2 are useless unless they are an unusual. You may think this may make everything cheaper for you, but it doesnt at all. This means that the tiniest change to the value of the key could make your hat go from 4 crates to 3. And if the price of keys eventualy rises to 63 ref and are sold at $1.90, then just like that, your crates are worth more than your hats. Your thinking, well thats far away right? it won't affect me, but its a linear (slope) thing, so we are already on the steep side of it and suffering a major impact but won't hit the worst for a long while of price inflation. To make matters worst; most people will not notice this because many never look at the prices of these items in pennies, they look at ref or scrap, this means that plenty of random people WILL buy the $0.03 crates without realizing thier trading value. Even the current price of keys doesn't competley match up: CURRENT PRICE- key $1.90 =/= $19.33 (19.33 ref x $0.10) NEW PRICE- key $1.90 =/= $1.97 (19.77 ref x $0.10) and i mean there are plenty people who sell keys for $1.80 to $1.90. So correct me if I'm wrong, but the main tf2 currency has a major flaw. And that flaw is that the price of keys is the invers of metal, and even though both are meant to be entertwined, they are hurting eachother and the value of all other items.
Guys lets not live in a world were we will start using crates as currency.I'm not saying the current situation is perfect but this needs to be fixed or left untouched and not pushed in any direction a step further. Let's determine prices of currency not based on the transaction of sales, but on how the prices affect the trading system
