The sales for outdated hats would most likely be below 40, but I have no proof of this.

still with a 42 going unsold for amonth, and so many sales under 38 it seems more likely that 35-38 better represent the median trading value. no?

I would go 32-42 here. Outliers should be defined by deviation from the mean, not by how fast they sell. It's not a good idea when more sales are called as outliers than sales used for the range itself. The 35 up for 6 days lowered to 32 before finally selling. I think setting 32 as the base has plenty of justification.
