England Fact #53: In the evening of March 978, Edward, while waiting to be granted passage at the gates of Corfe Castle, still mounted on his horse is surrounded and stabbed by men. He died on his horse while the frightened galloped away, dragging his corpse. No version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle stated who killed him, a poem about Edward's death dating to around 1000 says: "It is certain that he died through envy, at the hands of his own kin."
