England #320: It is more likely that Richard had simply come to feel strong enough to safely retaliate against these three men for their role in events of 1386–1388 and eliminate them as threats to his power. Arundel was the first of the three to be brought to trial, at the parliament of September 1397, he was condemned and executed after a quarrel with the King. Gloucester was being held prisoner by the Earl of Nottingham at Calais while awaiting his trial, where he died of presumably illness, but it was speculated that he was killed by orders of the King so he does not need to face the disgrace of condemning a prince to death.
