I mostly accepted the last suggestion based on the high end not the low-end.

If you have to camp outpost or trade servers to get a price, I usually don't consider it worth putting in the range. With so many buyers at 5 there was no reason not to put it in the range. Mods don't make counter-suggestions on principle so it was an either-or situation.

Naturally the mod who handles these may disagree.

Other links are a few days old, the lower price was 4.66 back then, so I don't see how those links are proof now.

the proof was counterproof for the suggestion making keys 4.77-5 ref. and that was terrible because he didnt have good proof thats keys are impossible at 4.66. this proof shows that keys were STILL possible at 4.66. this suggestion is mainly to override the current suggested price and place 4.66 at the low end.

2 days at time of posting. it matters because they were a few hours old when the 4.77-5 suggestion got accepted, so i dont see how that suggestion passed.

Our prices are never going to be perfect; plenty of players claim our key prices are consistently too low. not too high.

We don't list quicksells here, key or otherwise. As I already explained, keys at 4.66 are snatched up very quickly--they don't even need any bumps. That reeks of quicksell regardless of the specific numbers involved.

I've said all I can without repeating myself. Our job is to protect consumers, and that goes for higher prices as well as lower ones.

I really don't see what's hard to understand about this: if 70+ people are still willing to sell for 4.77 and under, that means something to the price of keys.

there's a good possibility that the amount of carding is what led to deflated $$$ prices on keys which played havoc with the entire market.

valve has started seriously cracking down on carders and now the $$$ value of keys is more realistic (no more $1.25/key blackmarket sales)

im pretty sure 75+ people buying/selling keys for 4.66/4.77 arent outliers, since thats a mass amount of people selling for the price, while outlier= "A person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system."

first of all outliners means prices such as <4 or 5< which mean it does not support the range at all

Instead of reading chicken entrails, use open buys ("high bid") to establish low and open sell offers ("low ask") to establish the high price.

Pretty simple but that would make the range 5-5.11 or so which would cause many heads to explode.

And it didn't have to. The purpose of "low price" is to show people what they can expect to get if they need to sell fast. Or, what kind of price they should consider cheap.

Right now, the answer to that question is "5 ref". You can't buy in quantity at 5 ref, 1 or 2 keys only, and you can instasell dozens of keys at 5 ref if you wish to. It's the very definition of "low price".

WOW 80! I bought and sold that many keys TODAY. tf2finance tracks more key sales in every single 4-hour period than your entire wall of old dead trades.

And there are just as many open buy trades offering 5 ref. Buy trades, as in, someone with metal who will buy for 5 ref.

The point is these are not outliners, there is a significant number of people who do this price from a few day ago to in this case a half hour or so ago.

The people who bought out every single link people have listed here probably immediately resold those keys for 5+ refined. They are indeed outliers.

The deffinition of an outliner is a price that is simply out of range that isn't in enough numbers to effect the price. Selling at 3 ref, would be an outliner. Selling at 4 ref would be an outliner. Selling at 1 scrap below with over 35+ trades of it happening within the last few days, isn't. Buying at low and selling high is how keys work right now, and has always worked. If the price isn't 4.66 it would be 4.77, where people would buy up the 4.77 keys and resell them at 5 as you said. But yet 4.77 isn't an outlining price.

At the end of the day though, these are simply persuasion points and tf2finance is not influenced by them since it records all pure metal to key transactions in the TF2 community.

what you say is actually true. there have always been a significant number of quickbuy key trades (this is how key traders profit when the price isn't skyrocketing). Some people need their keys very quick and some don't need them very fast at all. Showing "many" sellers that are willing to undercut the market indicates that the market price likely shouldn't be going up and possibly should be going down.

You are construing data to fit your agenda. What you think is "many" does not equate to a large percentage, if even 5%, of the total amount of key transactions that happen on a daily basis. Prices are based on the relative average selling value.

I'm fairly certain I can find 5-10 people that have sold a Strange Holiday Punch for 2 keys in the past week, yet I could also most likely find 35-40 people still trying to sell between 1.5-1.75 keys along with a multitude of transactions to quicksell buyers only paying 1-1.25 keys. The fact that I can find some sold for a higher amount does not matter when you consider the bigger picture that the majority of the data falls into a lower average value.

What you are basically doing here is listing these people that have successfully sold Strange Holiday Punches for a higher price, but trying to overlook the fact that the majority of transactions fall into lower, different range and therefore that is why the majority of sales price is the price that backpack.tf tries to convey on it's pricelist.

Out of curiousity, lets say someone had several Alts filled with each lots of keys and Metal. If he traded himself Metal for Keys in a large amount every day, wouldnt the Price naturally rise on Tf2.Finance?

He needs to do that through a trade server or outpost ad, the site doesn't monitor everyone.

He needs to be within a couple standard deviations of current price, and base64 needs to not detect this activity.

And, of course, you can fool the system in the other direction. Since there are lots of people clamoring for key prices to come down and none saying it should go up (important distinction: I say the reported price is lower than real price, so reported price should rise to match, but I don't want real price to rise), I'd expect any organized sham trades to skew the average downward, not up.

however the people that want keys to go down generally don't have as many (or any) keys. Therefor they have significantly less ability to influence the price as compared to someone with 500+ (Long I'm totally not talking about you).

There is an interesting phenomenon where prices below the true low market price (aka "high bid", currently 5 ref) appear with random distribution. You'd expect them to become less frequent with lower price, but that is not the case.

I call this price range the "ignorance zone" because people selling in it don't know any better. In other words, 4.33 and 4.66 and 4.88 all become equally likely once the buy market at 5 ref is strong enough, because the only people selling at any of those prices are people who don't know the market.

I am the best key buyer on outpost and I bought a ton of keys today. Here's how it broke down.

23 @ 5 ref

1 @ 4.88

5 @ 4.77

3 @ 4.66

2 @ 4.33

1 @ 4

See that? More at 4.33 than 4.88. That's the ignorance zone.

Adding on to that, when I accidentaly underprice an item, (for example i tried to sell a haunted crate for a weapon when they first came out) and get ~9001 adds, i will just do a bid in the chat boxes (in the haunted crate case i got a ref). This means that not all of the trades that you show as proof went through at that price, invalidating them.

Looking over the proof, most of it is reasonable and most of the trades eventually went through. Some of it seems a little bit like a protest, saying things like "4.33, im selling low and i dont agree with the current price and I am only selling one." Others sound like quick sells, saying stuff like "selling 1 key for 4.66 add i need metal fast :D" The rest seems like uniformed begginer traders using out of date prices and the richer traders not caring about 3 rec. The speed at witch they are snapped up though shows that traders know that they can resell for higher, showing that these are truly quicksells.
